Music Director/Organist-Choir Director

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach is a welcoming, diverse faith community that values music as a vital part of our worship and parish life. We are seeking a Music Director / Organist-Choir Director to lead and strengthen our rich musical tradition while helping shape its future.

The successful candidate will bring our worship to life through the magnificent sound of our exceptional 3-manual Austin pipe organ and Steinway grand piano, direct and rehearse our choir of paid section leaders and volunteer singers and help recruit and coordinate guest musicians for special services and concerts. St. Luke’s has a legacy of outstanding music spanning nearly 100 years and maintains a rich library of repertoire representing the seasons of the church year.

Ideally, candidates will be accomplished organists, pianists, and choral directors, with experience in a variety of liturgical and cultural musical styles and familiarity with digital tools for communication and music ministry administration. We seek a collaborative leader who works closely with clergy, staff, choir members, and parishioners, including our Spanish language music director and members of our Latino community. At the same time, we recognize that gifted church musicians come to positions like this with diverse backgrounds, gifts, and levels of experience. We warmly encourage applications from candidates who are continuing to grow in certain aspects of church music leadership and are eager to develop their skills in a supportive and vibrant parish setting. This is a part-time position to include recruiting paid section leaders or musicians, preparation, rehearsals on Sunday morning before services at 10 AM or 11 AM once a month bilingual service, plus special services during the year (Holy Week, Advent, Christmas, other). The salary starts at $37K.

As St. Luke’s enters an important season of transition and discernment as we search for a new Rector following the election of our previous Rector as Bishop, we welcome conversations about how this position can best serve the needs of the parish while fostering the talents, ministry, and professional growth of the successful candidate.

If you are interested in learning more, we would be delighted to begin a conversation. We also welcome referrals and would appreciate your help in sharing this opportunity with colleagues who may be a good fit. We are grateful for your interest and support as we seek the next chapter of music ministry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Please send your resume and other information to:
