Get Involved

Part of the joy of Saint Luke's is that there are so many opportunities to find something that is in line with skills and interests you already have (or areas where you'd like to grow!).

St. Luke’s ministries are divided into groups: Parish Community, Service, Development & Advocacy, and Christian Formation. Parish Community encompasses all ministries that seek to foster relationships among parishioners (inreach). The ministries in which we reach out to our neighborhood, our city and beyond are included under Service, Development, and Advocacy (outreach).

We encourage you to explore the ministries that interest you as you seek to discover how God is calling you to employ your gifts and talents. Most of the ministries described in these pages were initiated by parishioners who saw needs they could meet and opportunities they could seize. Perhaps you might feel the desire to join in and follow suit!

We encourage you to get involved within the St. Luke’s community. If you would like to volunteer and/or learn more, contact the church office at: office@stlukeslb.org.

Here are three examples of the many groups, ministries and advocacy projects that are currently active at Saint Luke's Long Beach:

Homeless Shower Program

Picture

St. Luke’s seeks to reach out to everyone in our community, including those who struggle for basic necessities. Four Saturdays a month we offer a hot shower, clean clothing, amenities, and a meal to our homeless friends. We serve from 75-100 at the Showers, plus some who come for clothing only. Our facilities include one full-service shower for women, as well as three full-service showers and two lavatories for men. Recently the church has been opened every second and fourth Saturday to our guests for silent prayer, or to have a volunteer pray with them at their request. We believe in practicing the words of St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.” Donations of clean, appropriate clothing, especially socks, underwear and jeans, magazines, books, and shoes are needed and welcome. Call the office or drop by during normal office hours to turn in donations.

Manna Meals

Picture

St. Luke’s seeks to reach out to everyone in our community, including those who struggle for basic necessities. For over 30 years on each second and fourth Saturday of the month, we offer a hot meal to our homeless friends, and needy neighbors. We serve around 200-300. The meal on the 2nd Saturday is prepared and served by Los Altos United Methodist Church in our Parish Hall. St. Luke’s prepares and serves the meal on the 4th Saturday. The meal consists of salad, bread & butter, cooked vegetables, casserole with meat, milk, punch, fruit, and dessert. The church is open for silent prayer, or a volunteer will pray with the guests at their request. If you need these services, please join us at St. Luke’s for coffee at 9 a.m. Lunch is served at 11:15 a.m. Directions can be found through the resources below. The Shower Program works in conjunction with Manna Meals to serve the same population.

St. Luke's Teaching Garden

Picture

The mission of the St. Luke’s Teaching Garden is to partner with our diverse community and teach them how to grow, maintain and harvest their own fruits and vegetables, which will stretch grocery dollars, foster community, and increase access to affordable natural food.  We will conduct educational workshops, hold seasonal community picnics, and host movie nights that will feature documentaries like Forks Over Knives. We have partnered with The Little Sunshine House, which is the on-site pre-school, and together we will teach the children where their food comes from. They will have space in the garden to grow their own food and learn about the seed to table concept. We are in the beginning stages of developing this urban garden and we are recruiting like-minded enthusiasts to join our team. To learn more and stay up to date on this ministry, click here!
