About Us

Mission

St. Luke's is an inclusive, multicultural community pursuing spiritual and social transformation.
At St. Luke's, we welcome and fully affirm everyone equally as children of God created in the image of God.

Core Values

  1. All that we do and all that we are comes down to our understanding of Jesus' example – love of God and love for one another; love for all of God’s Creation.
  2. St. Luke’s intentionally welcomes all people, celebrating our diverse, inclusive, multi-generational parish.
  3. St. Luke’s recognizes the impact of sin and division, and we invite each other and our neighbors into a community of forgiveness.
  4. St. Luke’s nurtures its members as we grow together in Christian faith and witness.
  5. St. Luke’s values sacramental worship as an expression of our love of God and God's love for us.
  6. St. Luke’s commits itself to the full inclusion and spiritual development of children and teenagers as human beings, as Christians, and as present and future leaders.
  7. St. Luke’s is called to be a generous community, sharing our resources with each other and with the world.
  8. St. Luke’s is dedicated to seeking social justice for all of God’s people, respecting the dignity of every human being, and responding to human needs.
  9. St. Luke’s reaches beyond its walls to offer concrete acts of love and service to our neighbor.

History

St. Luke’s has called Long Beach home for decades, and we are excited for the history yet to be made! Our congregation began in 1897 and moved to its current site in 1917. St Luke’s weathered severe damage to the sanctuary in the 1933 earthquake, but our community and church held strong. Over many decades we have built a facility that serves not only our needs but the needs of our neighborhood as well. St. Luke’s has a long tradition of excellence in music and the arts, service to the poor, and – in recent decades – radical inclusion.
